Cristiano Ronaldo Becomes Top FIFA World Cup Qualifying Scorer with Two Goals for Portugal
Cristiano Ronaldo has added another milestone to his legendary career, setting a new record as the top goal scorer in FIFA World Cup qualifying history.
The 40-year-old Portuguese star scored twice in Portugal’s 2-2 draw with Hungary on Tuesday, surpassing Guatemala’s Carlos Ruiz, who previously shared the record of 39 goals. Ronaldo now holds the record outright with 41 World Cup qualifying goals.
“It is no secret that representing the National Team means a lot to me,” Ronaldo wrote on social media. “I’m very proud to have reached this unique milestone for Portugal. Thank you to everyone who helped me get here. See you in November to seal the qualification for the World Cup!”
Ronaldo scored his first goal in the 22nd minute, finishing from close range after a precise cross from Nelson Semedo. He doubled the lead moments before halftime with another clinical finish from a Nuno Mendes cross.
Despite his record-breaking performance, Portugal was held to a draw after Hungary’s Dominik Szoboszlai equalized in stoppage time. Portugal remains five points clear atop Group F in UEFA qualifying, with two matches left to secure its World Cup spot.
The veteran striker now has 143 international goals, extending the all-time men’s record he first set in 2021.
Portugal’s next match is scheduled against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on November 13, where the team will have another chance to confirm its place in the 2026 World Cup.
