President Donald Trump is personally involved in plans for a new national monument near Washington, DC — a triumphal arch celebrating the country’s 250th anniversary. The project marks another step in his effort to shape the capital’s architectural identity with his distinctive style.

According to sources familiar with the plans, the proposed arch is part of the broader America250 celebrations marking the signing of the Declaration of Independence next July. A senior White House official told CNN the concept came directly from Trump himself.

“He came up with the design and has been part of the process every step of the way,” the official said.

Design models of the proposed stone arch have been spotted on the president’s desk in recent weeks, including during meetings with foreign leaders. Renderings from the firm Harrison Design show a classical structure inspired by Paris’s Arc de Triomphe, featuring columns, eagles, wreaths, and a gilded winged figure.

The proposed site for the monument is on the Virginia side of the Arlington Memorial Bridge, between Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial. Architect Nicolas Leo Charbonneau described it as “a gateway” for the capital.

“Washington, DC, is the only major Western capital that lacks an arch,” a source said. “It’s a time-honored tradition for celebrating events and ideas — and for acting as gateways to cities.”

Trump has long admired grand European architecture. During a 2017 trip to France, he watched the Bastille Day parade at the Arc de Triomphe — an experience that inspired his own military parade in 2025.

The design process for the new monument is ongoing, and funding sources have not yet been identified.

The plans follow Trump’s earlier executive order requiring federal buildings to adopt classical architecture. While the new arch is not directly subject to that rule, officials say it “follows the spirit of the executive order.”
