Wellness Wednesday: Natural Hair Color Alternatives
On this week's Wellness Wednesday, NBC Palm Springs anchor Mary Strong spoke with Clark's Nutrition expert Starkie Sowers about safer ways to color your hair without harsh chemicals.
Natural hair dyes offer a gentler alternative to traditional formulas, protecting both hair strands and scalp health. Unlike chemical versions that can strip moisture and damage thinning hair, natural options contain plant-based ingredients that nourish while coloring.
These formulas typically contain high percentages of natural ingredients and can last three to four months with proper care. Maintaining the color requires using appropriate shampoos and conditioners designed to preserve the dye.
For quick fixes between coloring sessions, temporary root touch-up products provide coverage that washes out after one shampoo.
Henna presents another natural option, derived from ground plant leaves mixed with herbs for various tones. Rather than penetrating the hair shaft, henna coats the follicle, offering protective benefits. This method lasts longer than conventional dyes but works only for darkening hair and tends to produce warmer, copper, or reddish tones.
