New Silverback Gorilla Cecil Makes His Debut at the San Francisco Zoo
The San Francisco Zoo has a new star resident. A 26-year-old male silverback Western lowland gorilla named Cecil will make his official public debut on Saturday after arriving from the Louisville Zoo in Kentucky earlier this summer.
Since his arrival in early August, Cecil has undergone a careful acclimation and introduction process with the zoo’s resident female gorillas. Robbie Graham, the zoo’s senior curator of mammals, explained that the transition included quarantine measures followed by a gradual visual introduction. Eventually, the gorillas were allowed to interact within the enclosure.
“They’ve had a couple of weeks to get used to each other and figure out the rules,” said Graham. “The girls definitely showed him who’s boss. Luckily, Cecil is probably one of the most even-tempered, chilled-out silverbacks there is.”
Zoo officials say Cecil’s presence is not only enriching for the gorilla troop but also for the city. “From the excitement I hear from the community, we know that visitors will come specifically to see him,” said the zoo’s COO and Interim co-CEO, Cassandra Costello.
Cecil’s arrival follows the loss of Oscar Jonesy, the zoo’s longtime 43-year-old silverback who died earlier this year after complications from a medical procedure.
Cecil’s debut marks a new chapter for the San Francisco Zoo’s gorilla family, giving visitors the chance to see the majestic silverback as he settles into his new home.
