Calls for Transparency Over $335,000 Raised for Palm Springs Bombing Recovery
It has been five months since the bombing at a Palm Springs fertility clinic shook the Coachella Valley, leaving one person dead and four injured. The May 17 explosion caused more than $12 million in damages and prompted a massive community effort to help affected local businesses recover.
Residents rallied together, raising $335,000 to support rebuilding efforts. The funds were held and managed by Palm Springs Pride, the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce, the city’s economic development department, and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. However, an NBC Palm Springs investigation found that while officials say all the money is accounted for, documentation proving how and when those funds were distributed has yet to be made public.
Business owner JR Roberts, whose Palm Canyon Drive property sustained heavy damage, said he received $10,000 from Palm Springs Pride and another $30,000 through the Chamber of Commerce from the tribe. Roberts credits those funds for helping cover more than half of his repair costs and expects his building to be fully restored within weeks.
Palm Springs Pride CEO and Mayor Ron deHarte, along with Chamber CEO Nona Watson, say they are still identifying additional businesses that may qualify for help and have reopened applications for those who suffered losses or income disruptions.
When asked for a list of businesses that already received aid, DeHarte declined, citing privacy concerns. However, nonprofit experts say transparency is a legal and ethical obligation when public donations are involved. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office, the state attorney general, and nonprofit consultants all confirmed that there is no legal expectation of anonymity for recipients of publicly raised funds.
As Palm Springs continues to rebuild, the community is calling for documentation verifying how the remaining funds have been distributed and which businesses still await assistance. NBC Palm Springs will continue to follow this developing story.
