Uncertainty Surrounds Identities of Over 100 Palestinian Bodies Returned by Israel
Palestinian forensic teams in Gaza are working to identify 120 bodies returned by Israel this week under the terms of a recent ceasefire agreement with Hamas. The remains, delivered to Gaza’s Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, were marked only with numbers and, in many cases, showed signs of binding, blindfolding, or gunshot wounds.
Israel agreed to hand over the remains of 360 individuals it described as “Gazan terrorists” as part of the ceasefire. However, the Israeli government has not released any information about the identities of those returned or the circumstances of their deaths.
Health officials in Gaza told CNN that each body came with documentation showing they had at some point been held at Israel’s Sde Teiman base in the Negev desert, a facility previously used to detain Palestinians during the war. Some of the returned bodies, according to forensic doctors, exhibited broken bones and other signs suggesting possible abuse.
CNN reviewed photographs showing bodies with zip ties, blindfolds, and gunshot wounds. Several appeared to be young men wearing civilian clothing, with some still bearing medical tubing or dirt consistent with exhumation. Independent forensic experts who examined the photos said at least one victim appeared to have been restrained before death.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health has launched a website displaying images of the remains to help families identify loved ones. Some have already been recognized by relatives, including a few confirmed to have taken part in the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel.
At the hospital in Khan Younis, families continue to search for missing relatives. One woman, Rasmiya Mohammed Khairi Qdeih, said she has already lost six sons in the war and continues to look for another who went missing during the October 7 attacks. “Whenever they bring the bodies of prisoners, I come here and search among them,” she said. “Yesterday, I searched through more than 30 bodies.”
Human rights groups, including the Palestinian Center for the Missing and Forcibly Disappeared Persons, are urging Israel to release full information about those whose bodies were returned. “The omission of names arouses suspicion and strengthens doubts about enforced disappearances,” the group said in a statement.
It remains unclear how many more Palestinian bodies are still being held by Israel. Officials have said that the remains of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and his brother Mohammed will not be returned to Gaza.
