Federal Shutdown Forces Unprecedented Furloughs at Nuclear Security Agency
The federal government shutdown enters its third week Monday with the National Nuclear Security Administration preparing to furlough approximately 1,400 workers—the first such action in the agency's 25-year history.
The Department of Energy announced that fewer than 400 employees will remain on duty to maintain oversight of the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile. The furloughed workers will receive notices Monday, marking an unprecedented disruption for the agency tasked with managing U.S. nuclear arsenals.
The NNSA, established in 2000, has maintained full staffing through previous government shutdowns. The current shutdown, now approaching three weeks, has forced the agency to reduce operations while keeping essential security personnel in place.
A Department of Energy spokesperson said the nuclear stockpile remains reliable and poses no national security threat despite the reduced workforce.
