Harold Matzner Celebration of Life Set for Tonight at McCallum Theatre
The Coachella Valley will gather this evening to honor the life and legacy of Harold Matzner, the philanthropist and community leader who died September 4 at age 88, following a brief illness.
The celebration of life begins at 5 p.m. at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert. A livestream will be available at haroldmatzner.com for those unable to attend in person.
Matzner was best known as the longtime chairman of the Palm Springs International Film Society, where his leadership elevated the annual film festival into one of the industry's most respected events. Under his guidance, the festival became a major destination during awards season, bringing global recognition to Palm Springs.
His philanthropic reach extended far beyond the arts. Since 2000, Matzner donated more than $70 million to nonprofits throughout the Coachella Valley, supporting healthcare, education, and cultural institutions. His contributions helped fund facilities and programs that continue to serve the region today.
Attendees are encouraged to arrive early, as all guests will undergo security screening and bag checks before entry. A reception will follow the ceremony, giving family, friends, and community leaders an opportunity to share reflections on Matzner's impact.
