La Quinta Teen Fighting for His Life After DUI Crash; Community Rallies Around 14-Year-Old Baseball Player
A family in La Quinta is holding on to hope as their 14-year-old son fights for his life after being hit by a drunk driver while riding his bike home earlier this month.
Liam Cantu, a freshman at La Quinta High School and a member of the school’s baseball team, remains in critical condition at Loma Linda Hospital. His parents say he underwent major brain surgery and continues to show small signs of improvement as doctors reduce his medication to monitor brain activity.
“It’s the worst phone call of my life,” said Liam’s mother. “I just miss him so much. We’ve been seeing a lot of miracles and getting little signs that he’s still here.”
The crash occurred on October 10 when Liam and another teen were struck by a drunk driver who fled the scene. Since then, the Coachella Valley community has rallied around Liam’s family, offering meals, donations, and prayers. A GoFundMe page created to help with medical expenses has raised thousands of dollars, and teammates, coaches, and parents have offered continued support.
Liam’s parents are using this tragedy to urge others to think before getting behind the wheel after drinking. “If you’re going to drink, don’t drive. Stay home, get an Uber, or find a hotel nearby,” they said. “It’s not worth the pain we’re feeling right now.”
Tonight, at 7 p.m., La Quinta High School will host a special Words of Encouragement ceremony at the school’s varsity baseball field. Family, friends, teammates, and coaches will gather to share messages of hope and strength for Liam’s recovery.
“We’re just asking for a miracle right now,” Liam’s family said. “We’re asking everybody to come together and pray for our son.”
