Melania Trump Silent as East Wing of the White House Is Demolished for Ballroom Project

Melania Trump has remained silent as the East Wing of the White House — long home to the offices of America’s first ladies — is demolished to make room for a new presidential ballroom.

The First Lady’s office declined to comment when asked by CNN about her reaction to the construction. The project, long sought by President Donald Trump, has temporarily halted White House tours and displaced several staff offices.

Although Melania Trump’s team has been affected by the changes, her small staff has relocated to other areas of the White House, including the Vermeil Room, Library, China Room, and South Mezzanine. Other displaced departments, such as the White House Military Office and Visitors Office, have moved to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

The First Lady has spent much of her husband’s second term outside Washington, living primarily in New York and Palm Beach. Her absence — and lack of public involvement in the renovation — marks a sharp departure from her first term, when she played an active role in White House restoration projects. Those efforts included redesigning the Rose Garden, refurbishing the Blue Room, and unveiling a new tennis pavilion.

Experts say her silence underscores a diminished role for the First Lady in this administration. “Watching the demolition is the physical embodiment of watching the First Lady’s role become smaller and smaller,” said author Kate Andersen Brower.

The East Wing, first constructed in 1902 and reimagined during the Roosevelt administration, has housed the Office of the First Lady since Rosalynn Carter’s tenure in 1977.

Former East Wing staffers from multiple administrations expressed dismay at the loss of the historic space. Anita McBride, who served as chief of staff to First Lady Laura Bush, said, “First ladies’ staff lived and witnessed history within those walls, and nothing can take away the memories of working in that extraordinarily special place of purpose and service.”

Meanwhile, former First Lady Hillary Clinton criticized the demolition on social media, writing, “It’s not his house. It’s your house. And he’s destroying it.”
