Mexico Extradites Suspected Chinese Fentanyl Kingpin to the United States

Mexico has extradited an alleged Chinese fentanyl kingpin, Zhi Dong Zhang, to U.S. authorities, where he faces charges of drug trafficking and money laundering, officials confirmed Thursday.

Zhang, also known by the alias “Brother Wang,” is accused of exporting, transporting, and distributing more than 1,000 kilograms of cocaine and 1,800 kilograms of fentanyl, while allegedly laundering over $150 million in illegal annual profits, according to court documents cited by CNNE.

Investigators say Zhang operated an international network that stretched across the United States, Central America, Europe, China, and Japan. Records indicate he worked with Mexican criminal organizations to facilitate large-scale drug trafficking operations.

The Chinese national was first arrested in Mexico in October 2024 and placed under house arrest while awaiting an extradition hearing. However, on July 11, 2025, he escaped and fled the country before being captured in Cuba. Mexico’s National Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch announced on X that Zhang was turned over to U.S. authorities on Thursday, thanking the Cuban government for its “valuable cooperation” in his recapture.

Fentanyl remains a leading cause of overdose deaths in the United States, and Washington has repeatedly accused Beijing of failing to control the flow of precursor chemicals used to make the synthetic opioid.

President Donald Trump said fentanyl would be “at the front of the list” during his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Asia. Meanwhile, Chinese officials pushed back against Washington’s criticism, with a Foreign Ministry spokesperson saying they were “not aware of the specific situation” regarding Zhang’s case.
