Indio Police Increase Patrols After Series of Smash-and-Grab Break-Ins Across the City
Indio law enforcement is increasing patrols across the city after a recent series of smash-and-grab break-ins targeting local businesses. Police say at least six businesses have been hit, with investigators now looking into whether the crimes are connected to a single suspect.
One of the victims, Fresh Juice Bar owner Marcy Medain, says her Indio location was broken into last Tuesday. “I wish he would just come in and ask for a smoothie—we would have given him a smoothie,” Medain said. While the incident caused property damage, no money was stolen since the store keeps its register empty overnight.
Other businesses targeted include CV Barbecue and Indio Flores. Indio Police Sergeant Abraham Plata says patrols have been stepped up throughout the downtown area, extending to Avenue 50 and Jefferson Street. “We are stepping up our patrols to assure the public that our city is safe,” Plata said. “We’re doing what we can to provide a safe environment for everyone.”
Medain says the experience has prompted her to take additional precautions and encourages other business owners to do the same. “If you have a cash drawer, leave it open and empty. That way, they’ll see there’s nothing to take and move on,” she said.
Police say evidence indicates the same person may be responsible for several of the recent break-ins, though the investigation remains ongoing.
