Study Finds Long Walks Linked to Better Heart Health and Longer Life
Taking longer walks could be the key to a healthier heart and a longer life, according to new research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The study found that adults who regularly walked for periods longer than 10 minutes had significantly lower risks of cardiovascular disease and premature death compared to those who took shorter, scattered walks.
“Most studies focus on total daily steps, but ours shows that how you accumulate those steps matters too—especially for less active individuals,” said Dr. Borja del Pozo Cruz, the study’s lead author and senior researcher at Universidad Europea de Madrid. “Even if you don’t reach 10,000 steps a day, taking a few longer walks can make a real difference for heart health and longevity.”
Researchers analyzed data from more than 33,000 adults in the UK Biobank, focusing on those who walked fewer than 8,000 steps per day. Participants who spent more continuous time walking saw greater cardiovascular benefits, including improved blood circulation, reduced blood pressure, and better glucose control—all of which lower the risk of heart disease.
Dr. Andrew Freeman, director of cardiovascular prevention and wellness at National Jewish Health in Denver, compared long walks to strength training. “You can’t lift a 100-pound weight without building up to it,” Freeman said. “The same is true for your heart—you need to build cardiac strength gradually.”
Experts emphasize that the goal is not just step count, but consistency and duration. “Pace still matters, but continuous walking bouts seem to be powerful factors,” del Pozo Cruz said. For those just starting out, he recommends simple changes such as parking farther away or adding brisk, uninterrupted walks into daily routines.
Ultimately, researchers say that incorporating longer, regular walks can improve endurance, strengthen the cardiovascular system, and help prevent high blood pressure and coronary disease—proving that sometimes, a simple stroll really can change your life.
