Senate Republicans Join Democrats in Bid to End Trump Tariffs on Canada
A bipartisan group of senators has voted to challenge President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada, with four Republicans joining Democrats in a rare show of opposition to the administration’s trade policy.
The Senate passed a resolution 50 to 46 on Wednesday to end the tariffs by terminating the president’s emergency declaration that authorized them. Senators Rand Paul, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and former Republican Leader Mitch McConnell broke ranks with their party to support the measure. All four had previously voted against the Canada tariffs earlier this year.
While the resolution is unlikely to move forward in the House, the vote represents a symbolic rebuke of the president’s approach to trade. Earlier this week, the Senate also voted to end tariffs on Brazil, and another vote is expected Thursday targeting what Trump has called “liberation day” tariffs.
Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, one of the measure’s co-sponsors, said the administration’s justification for the tariffs—claiming fentanyl from Canada constituted a national emergency—was unfounded. “It is ridiculous to say that fentanyl is an emergency with respect to Canada,” Kaine said. “It’s a pretext being used to pour more and more tariffs onto Canada.”
Kaine acknowledged that the resolution may not reach the president’s desk but argued it still sends an important message. “When he sees Republicans starting to vote against his policies, even in small numbers, that makes an impression,” he said.
The vote underscores growing unease within both parties about the economic fallout from escalating trade tensions with U.S. allies.
