Grand Egyptian Museum Finally Opens After Two Decades and $1 Billion in Development

More than two decades after it was first conceived, the Grand Egyptian Museum has officially opened its doors to the public — marking the completion of one of the most ambitious cultural projects in history.

Located just outside Cairo, the $1 billion museum stands within view of the Pyramids of Giza and houses more than 100,000 artifacts, making it the largest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization. The grand opening was so significant that the Egyptian government declared a public holiday to commemorate the occasion.

Irish architect Róisín Heneghan, who co-founded Heneghan Peng Architects, recalled the shock of learning that her small Dublin-based firm had won the international design competition for the museum back in 2003. Their proposal was selected from more than 1,500 entries worldwide.

The journey to completion was anything but simple. The project endured years of political upheaval, including Egypt’s 2011 revolution, and global setbacks such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite repeated delays, the final result reflects both the resilience of its creators and the enduring legacy of Egypt’s ancient civilization.

Inside, visitors can explore over 258,000 square feet of exhibition space, featuring papyrus scrolls, sarcophagi, textiles, pottery, and human mummies. A highlight of the museum is a dedicated gallery displaying all 5,000 items discovered in King Tutankhamun’s tomb.

The museum’s design features a sweeping atrium bathed in natural light, with a colossal statue of Ramesses II greeting visitors. Angular patterns on the facade echo the geometry of the nearby pyramids, while its sloping roof aligns directly with the Great Pyramid’s peak — symbolically linking ancient architecture with modern innovation.

“The building creates a new edge to the desert plateau,” Heneghan said. “It was always a balance between giving the museum the prominence it deserves and respecting the skyline of Giza.”

After decades of anticipation, the Grand Egyptian Museum is now poised to become a cornerstone of Egypt’s cultural tourism and a tribute to the country’s unparalleled history.
