White House Tightens Media Access with New Restrictions on Reporters

The White House announced Friday a new rule restricting reporters’ access to the offices of top communications aides within the Trump administration. According to a memo from the White House communications office, members of the media are now prohibited from entering room 140 of the West Wing without a prior appointment. The room, which sits adjacent to the Oval Office, has traditionally been a key location for journalists seeking information and comment from administration officials.

This move marks the latest effort by the White House to exert tighter control over media coverage. Earlier this month, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth implemented a policy requiring reporters covering the Pentagon to sign agreements prohibiting the use of material not officially authorized by the Department of Defense. Nearly every major news outlet refused to sign the policy, citing concerns about press freedom and transparency.

The new West Wing access restriction underscores ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and the press, as journalists push back against what many view as an erosion of access to government operations and information.
