Democrats Sweep Major Races Nationwide as California Approves Newsom’s Redistricting Plan

Democrats won key elections across the country Tuesday, from the East Coast to California, in a broad show of opposition to President Donald Trump nearly one year into his second term.

In Virginia, former congresswoman Abigail Spanberger made history as the state’s first female governor, defeating Republican Winsome Earle-Sears in a decisive victory fueled by concerns over affordability and federal job cuts. In New Jersey, Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli to become the state’s first female Democratic governor, marking a major win in a state long viewed as a bellwether for suburban voters.

In New York City, 34-year-old democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani won the mayoral race, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent backed by Trump. Mamdani’s victory was powered by voters focused on rising living costs and housing affordability.

Out west, California voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 50 — Governor Gavin Newsom’s ballot measure to redraw the state’s congressional maps — giving Democrats five more favorable U.S. House districts. According to NBC News and the Associated Press, the measure passed with 66% of the statewide vote, including 56% approval in Riverside County.

Live pictures from Sacramento showed celebrations at the California Democratic Party headquarters, where Newsom and state leaders hailed the outcome as a win for democracy and a strong pushback against Trump’s redistricting efforts nationwide.

Congressman Ken Calvert, whose 41st District covers parts of the Coachella Valley, issued a statement following the vote, saying, “Despite the passage of Prop 50, I am determined to keep fighting for the families I represent in Congress.” Analysts note that the new congressional maps could make his district more competitive in upcoming elections.

Tuesday’s elections were widely viewed as a referendum on Trump’s leadership, with Democrats also securing victories in Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court races and expanding their legislative majority in Virginia. The results point to growing voter frustration over the economy and cost of living but also show a united Democratic front heading into the 2026 midterm elections.
