Honoring the Greatest Generation: Coachella Valley’s WWII Veterans Share Their Stories This Veterans Day
This Veterans Day, NBC Palm Springs is honoring the heroes of the Greatest Generation — World War II veterans who proudly served their country and now call the Coachella Valley home.
In a special half-hour broadcast, local veterans reflect on the defining moments of their lives — from the chaos of war to the quiet pride of returning home. Among those featured are two women whose service broke barriers and paved the way for future generations: Marine Corporal Dorothee Irwin and Army translator Lydia Van Vogt.
Both women were among the first to serve in their respective military roles during World War II, at a time when few women were given such opportunities.
“They were coming over the radio from Boston that they needed women,” Lydia recalled. “When my father heard that, he said the men would go overseas to fight, but we would stay here and take their work over — and that’s what I did.”
Dorothy also shared vivid memories of the dangers and fears that came with her wartime service.
“I remember how I ran, how I fell down on the floor because bombs were falling,” she said. “It was very, very scary.”
The broadcast also explores the Coachella Valley’s own World War II legacy, including its role as a desert training ground for U.S. troops preparing for battle nearly 80 years ago.
Viewers can watch “80 Years Later: The Coachella Valley’s World War II Legacy” this Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. on NBC Palm Springs, just before the station’s live coverage of the Veterans Day parade.
This special program pays tribute not only to the veterans who served but also to the community that continues to honor their service, sacrifice, and enduring spirit.
