AYSO Desert Hot Springs Launches Youth Referee Mentorship Program to Tackle Volunteer Shortage

Soccer leagues across the Coachella Valley are making a big push for new volunteers — and this time, they’re turning to the next generation.

Local AYSO organizations say they’re facing a shortage of referees, a key role that keeps games fair, safe, and fun for hundreds of young players every weekend. To help fill that gap, AYSO Desert Hot Springs has launched a new Youth Referee Mentorship Program, designed to train and empower teens to take the lead both on and off the field.

The program gives participants, ages 12 to 17, hands-on experience learning the rules of the game, proper officiating techniques, and how to manage real match situations — all under the guidance of certified adult mentors.

Through shadowing experienced referees and gradually taking on more responsibility, youth participants build decision-making skills, teamwork, and self-assurance. For many of these young referees, it’s their first time taking charge in a leadership role. One teen participant said stepping onto the field gave them a new sense of confidence.

League organizers hope the initiative will not only ease the referee shortage but also build a lasting culture of community involvement and leadership among Coachella Valley youth.
