Biden Says Trump Has ‘Taken a Wrecking Ball’ to Democracy in Omaha Speech

Former President Joe Biden delivered a sharp rebuke of President Donald Trump during a Nebraska Democratic Party gala in Omaha, accusing him of “taking a wrecking ball” to American democracy.

“I knew Trump was going to take a wrecking ball to the country, but I had no idea there was going to be an actual wrecking ball,” Biden said, referring to the president’s demolition of the White House’s East Wing to build a 90,000-square-foot ballroom. “It’s a perfect symbol of his presidency.”

Biden criticized Trump’s leadership, arguing he has damaged the Constitution, the rule of law, and the country’s democratic institutions. He also took aim at Trump’s claim that the nation is in a “golden age,” quipping that “the only gold is the stuff he’s hanging on the mantle.”

The former president spoke candidly about his own battle with prostate cancer, connecting it to ongoing debates about health care funding. “I thank God for the doctors and the nurses and the incredible breakthroughs we’re making in cancer research,” Biden said. “Now Trump and his Republican friends are cutting government funding for health care and making it more expensive for virtually everyone.”

Biden’s remarks came amid the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, driven by a stalemate over health care subsidies. Democrats continue to block a Republican funding bill that excludes an extension of enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies.

Celebrating recent Democratic victories in major races across the country, Biden declared, “The Democratic Party is back,” while urging supporters to stay vigilant in protecting democracy. “Democracy is not a given,” he said. “No one — not even the president — can destroy our democracy if we stand together and fight for it.”
