‘People Are Really Hurting’: Shutdown Impacts Americans from Airports to Grocery Stores

As the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history drags on, its effects are being felt in nearly every corner of the country — from crowded airports and grocery stores to struggling households and small businesses.

Travelers faced chaos Friday as more than a thousand flights were canceled and thousands more delayed after the Federal Aviation Administration ordered a 4% reduction in domestic flights due to staffing shortages. Frustrations boiled over as travelers shared stories of canceled weddings, missed family visits, and derailed holiday plans.

Meanwhile, millions of Americans who rely on food assistance were left uncertain about when they would receive full Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. A federal judge ordered the government to pay full benefits for November, but the Supreme Court temporarily paused that ruling, adding more confusion and fear for families already struggling to put food on the table.

Economists warn the prolonged shutdown could hurt the broader economy. National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said the impact is “far worse” than expected and could deepen if it continues another month.

Federal workers are also under mounting pressure. Many have been working without pay for weeks, unable to cover rent, groceries, or utilities. In El Paso, Texas, nurse Lisa Morales said she may have to find another job if the shutdown continues, while furloughed employees across the country are turning to job fairs and personal savings to get by.

With Congress deadlocked — Republicans short of the votes to pass a funding measure and Democrats standing firm on health care funding demands — there’s still no clear end in sight. As one traveler told CNN, “People are really hurting out here. It’s not just the traveling public — it’s the whole economy.”
