Honoring the Greatest Generation: Coachella Valley WWII Veterans Share Their Stories Ahead of Veterans Day Parade
As the Coachella Valley prepares to honor its veterans this Veterans Day, NBC Palm Springs will pay tribute to the heroes of the Greatest Generation with a special half-hour program airing at 3:00 p.m., just before the start of the city’s annual Veterans Day Parade.
The feature introduces viewers to five World War II veterans who now reside in the Coachella Valley, each with a story shaped by duty, sacrifice, and resilience. Nearly 80 years after the end of World War II, these veterans reflect on their experiences, offering rare firsthand accounts of a time that changed the course of history.
Among those featured is Corporal Mick Dawson, who served with the Royal Army Service Corps on a U.S. Army Air Base established near his hometown in England. Mick recalls the day Britain entered the war:
“All these men stood absolutely staring into nothing. Their faces were white with fright. The first thing we had to do was black out all our windows because the German bombers would come over and see any light — and they would go for that light and bomb it.”
Through interviews and archival footage, the special captures both the fear and the fortitude of those who endured the war years. Viewers will also learn about the Coachella Valley’s own World War II training grounds, a lesser-known chapter in local history that played a role in preparing American troops for combat overseas.
The broadcast, airing right before the Veterans Day Parade at 3:00 p.m. on NBC Palm Springs, honors the voices of those who served and reminds viewers of the enduring legacy of the World War II generation — a legacy of courage, unity, and unwavering love of country.
