The BBC is facing one of the biggest crises in its history as President Donald Trump threatens legal action against the British broadcaster over a misleading edit in a 2024 documentary about his reelection campaign. Trump’s lawyers sent a letter demanding at least $1 billion in damages, accusing the BBC of defamation and election interference.

A BBC spokesperson told CNN the organization would review the letter and respond in due course. The controversy follows the resignations of BBC Director-General Tim Davie and BBC News chief Deborah Turness, who stepped down amid public outrage over the editing error. The broadcaster’s chair, Samir Shah, apologized for what he called an “error of judgment,” acknowledging the edit made it appear Trump called for violent action during his January 6 speech.

The incident has fueled a wider political storm in the UK. Conservative critics are seizing on the scandal to question the BBC’s credibility and push for changes to its publicly funded model. Former Prime Minister Liz Truss accused the network of “failing to tell the truth” and called for an end to “nationalized broadcasting.”

The BBC is currently under government review as it approaches renewal of its Royal Charter in 2027, a process that determines its funding structure and public role.

BBC veteran John Simpson warned the organization faces a “fight for its survival,” while Financial Times editor Robert Shrimsley noted that the controversy has become a political weapon in an ongoing campaign to undermine public service broadcasting.

Despite the turmoil, BBC correspondent James Landale expressed confidence in the network’s values, writing, “We are not perfect; we must always strive to be better. But in a darkening world, we remain a shaft of light.”
