Palm Springs High School Band Headed to Rome for New Year's Performance
The Palm Springs High School "Spirit of the Sands" marching band has earned a prestigious opportunity — they're one of only eight bands across the country selected to perform in Rome's New Year's Day Parade.
"Rome is a really big deal. It's a really great opportunity," said Kayla Bautista, the band's drum major. "Get to meet new people, get to represent Palm Springs, California in a different country."
The band, which has been rehearsing since late July, will perform at multiple venues during their trip. In addition to the New Year's Day parade, they'll perform at a festival in Frascati, about 12 kilometers outside of Rome, and give a concert in a church that's roughly 500 to 600 years old.
The invitation comes after the band's impressive track record. Two years ago, the Spirit of the Sands performed three concerts in Spain, including shows in Granada, Valencia, and Madrid. That successful European tour led to the invitation to perform in Rome.
However, getting all 90 members of the Spirit of the Sands team overseas is a massive undertaking. The trip is projected to cost approximately $360,000, with finances being their greatest challenge.
"Every student needs a jacket to go and a bag, and we rent instruments for our concerts. There's just tons of stuff that isn't covered by their tour fees," said Band Director Brian Ingleson.
The band is seeking community support to help reach their fundraising goal. Those interested in helping can visit psband.org, where they can donate any amount or even sponsor a student. "Every little bit goes towards their fees and the incidentals that we also have," Ingleson said.
