House Passes Bill to End Longest Government Shutdown in U.S. History
The nation’s longest government shutdown is coming to an end. Late tonight, the House of Representatives approved a Senate-passed bill to reopen the federal government after more than 40 days of closure. The legislation now heads to President Trump’s desk, where he’s expected to sign it within the hour, officially restoring federal operations.
The White House confirmed that the president will sign the funding bill on camera from the Oval Office. While the move will bring relief to many federal workers, officials warn that the shutdown’s effects will linger.
Flights have been cut due to air traffic controller shortages, food banks are still seeing increased demand, and back pay will take time to process.
The bill funds the government through January, but health care premium disputes remain unresolved — raising the possibility of another shutdown early next year.
