President Trump to Allow New Offshore Oil and Gas Drilling Off California Coast

President Trump is preparing to allow new oil and gas drilling off California’s coast for the first time in roughly 40 years, according to a report from the New York Times citing three sources briefed on the plan.

The Department of the Interior could announce the proposal as early as this week, marking a significant policy shift that would open federally controlled waters along the Pacific coast to new energy exploration. The move would reverse long-standing restrictions that have been in place since the early 1980s following major public opposition to offshore drilling.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, a vocal opponent of offshore drilling, has already pledged to challenge the administration’s plan in court. “California will not stand by while our coastline and our communities are put at risk,” Newsom said in response to the reported policy change.

Environmental groups and coastal advocates are expected to join the legal fight, citing concerns over potential oil spills, marine life impacts, and the broader implications for climate change.

If finalized, the proposal would mark one of the most significant expansions of offshore energy development in decades — and a flashpoint between federal and state leaders over environmental and energy policy.
