Apple Launches Digital Passport ID for Airport Security

iPhone users can now present digital identification at U.S. airports through a new feature in Apple Wallet that uses passport credentials.

The digital ID option is currently being tested at TSA checkpoints at more than 250 airports across the United States. Users create the digital ID by uploading information from a valid U.S. passport through the Apple Wallet app.

The feature provides an alternative for travelers who do not have a Real ID-compliant driver's license or state ID, which will be required for domestic air travel starting May 7, 2025.

Apple previously introduced the capability to add eligible driver's licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet, which is available in select states. The passport-based digital ID expands these options nationwide.

However, the digital ID has significant limitations. It does not replace a physical passport and cannot be used for international travel or border crossings. Travelers will still need to carry their physical passport for any international trips.

TSA has been gradually expanding its acceptance of digital IDs at security checkpoints as part of a broader effort to modernize the screening process.
