Childhood Hypertension Rates Double Globally Over Two Decades

High blood pressure in children has nearly doubled worldwide over the past 20 years, according to a new study published Wednesday in The Lancet Child and Adolescent Health.

Researchers found that hypertension rates among boys and girls stood at approximately 3% in 2000. By 2020, those rates had climbed to around 6%, representing a significant increase in cardiovascular health risks for young people.

The findings raise particular concern because children diagnosed with hypertension face an elevated risk of developing heart disease in adulthood. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States.

Medical experts point to several contributing factors behind the rise in pediatric hypertension. Dietary patterns play a major role, with children consuming high levels of sodium and ultra-processed foods showing increased risk. A sedentary lifestyle has also been identified as a key contributor to the problem.

The study's global scope highlights that this trend is not limited to any single region, suggesting widespread changes in childhood diet and activity levels across different populations.
