30-Year-Old Man Arrested After Standoff
INDIO — A 30-year-old man was arrested Thursday afternoon following a nearly four-hour standoff with police after allegedly attacking his older brother with a crowbar and knife at their shared residence in Indio.
Indio police responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon shortly after 6:40 p.m. Wednesday in the 82000 block of Valencia Avenue. Officers found a 32-year-old man inside the home suffering from multiple stab wounds.
According to the Indio Police Department, the suspect allegedly struck his brother in the head with a crowbar before stabbing him several times with a knife. The motive for the attack has not been disclosed.
Officers rendered first aid to the victim before paramedics transported him to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where he was listed in stable condition. The suspect had fled the scene before police arrived.
The situation escalated Thursday morning when a witness saw the suspect return to the residence around 10:30 a.m. and notified authorities. Officers surrounded the home and attempted multiple times to communicate with the suspect using a surround and callout tactic, but he refused to exit.
Desert Regional S.W.A.T. was called to assist. The standoff ended shortly after 1:30 p.m. when the man exited the residence and was arrested without further incident.
The suspect was booked into Benoit Detention Center on suspicion of attempted homicide. The identities of both brothers have not been released.
Road closures on Valencia Avenue between Sungold Street and Palm Street, and Sungold between Tahquitz Avenue and Hoover Avenue have since fully reopened.
