Indiana Republican Senators Block Trump’s Redistricting Push

President Donald Trump’s push to redraw congressional maps in Indiana has hit a roadblock after Republican leaders in the state Senate announced they will not reconvene for a special session to create additional GOP-leaning districts.

Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray said Friday there is not enough support among Republican senators to pass new maps, despite months of internal discussions. “Over the last several months, Senate Republicans have given very serious and thoughtful consideration to the concept of redrawing our state’s congressional maps,” Bray said in a statement. “Today, I’m announcing there are not enough votes to move that idea forward, and the Senate will not reconvene in December.”

The decision comes after Indiana Governor Mike Braun called for a special session at Trump’s request, arguing that new maps are needed to prevent what he described as “Democratic gerrymandering.” Braun urged lawmakers to “do the right thing and show up to vote for fair maps,” saying Hoosiers deserve transparency on where their representatives stand.

Indiana Republicans hold supermajorities in both legislative chambers and currently control seven of the state’s nine congressional districts. Trump’s political team had hoped to flip the Democratic-held 1st District in northwest Indiana and the 7th District in Indianapolis to strengthen GOP control in the U.S. House.

The setback in Indiana marks the latest challenge in Trump’s nationwide redistricting effort. Similar resistance has emerged in Kansas, while GOP-led states such as Texas, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio have already approved new maps adding nine potential Republican seats.

Democrats, meanwhile, have secured five new Democratic-leaning districts in California following a voter-approved map change. The Trump administration’s Justice Department has joined a legal challenge seeking to block that plan.
