Republicans Face Pressure to Craft Health Care Plan as Democrats Target Midterms

Republicans in Washington are scrambling to create a health care plan as the expiration of enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies looms, threatening to double health insurance premiums for millions of Americans.

The 43-day government shutdown ended without a deal to extend the subsidies, leaving the GOP under growing pressure to address health care costs before the end-of-year deadline. Party leaders are working on their own package focused on lowering costs but have not committed to renewing the subsidies, which are set to expire December 31.

Inside the White House, officials are exploring President Donald Trump’s vision for an overhaul of Obamacare. Early discussions have centered on replacing the ACA subsidies with direct financial support through expanded health savings accounts, though some Republicans fear reopening the health care debate could backfire politically.

Democrats are watching closely, betting that Republican inaction will hand them a powerful campaign issue heading into the 2026 midterms.

Moderate Republicans, including Reps. Jen Kiggans of Virginia and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, are calling for at least a one-year extension of the subsidies. However, House leadership remains divided, with key figures like Speaker Mike Johnson and Rep. Jim Jordan rejecting any plan that continues funding Obamacare programs.

As negotiations unfold, the GOP faces an uphill battle to balance ideological goals with voter concerns about affordability — a challenge that could define the next election cycle.
