80 Years Later: Gold Star Families

As strong as the United States Army Air Force was in World War II, around 80,000 airmen died in combat and training. Some crews were shot down by enemy forces or experienced mechanical issues. Others faced inclement weather, which is what happened to Coachella Valley native Second Lieutenant Owen Kaufman, who was killed in 1944. Today, his niece, Kitty Kylie Hayes, continues to share his story.

Cathedral City High School history teacher Lee Wilson Jr. assembled this memorial wall after taking on  as a historian at the American Legion in Palm Springs.  The memorial includes photos, military keepsakes and other items. And for Lee, this project was deeply personal. I have a sort of dubious honor having two former students who were killed in action,
