Heavy Rain Triggers Widespread Flooding, Road Closures Across Coachella Valley

Heavy rainfall moved through the Coachella Valley Saturday, causing flooding and prompting several major road closures throughout the desert. The storm system brought steady showers across both the east and west ends of the valley, impacting drivers.

In La Quinta, flooding along Avenue 50 left pools of water covering sections of the road. Video from the area showed cars attempting to navigate the rising water, prompting safety reminders from officials. Authorities emphasized that even six inches of moving water can sweep an adult off their feet and urged drivers to avoid flooded roads whenever possible.

Further northwest in Cathedral City, heavy rain continued to fall throughout the afternoon, contributing to deeper flooding along Date Palm Drive near the Interstate 10 interchange. Water was reported pushing into nearby neighborhoods, and the number two southbound lane was blocked north of the Tachevah. City officials announced additional closures on Date Palm Drive westbound from Vista Chino and urged drivers to stay clear of Varner Road due to unsafe conditions.

In Palm Springs, storm runoff led to additional wash closures on North Indian Canyon Drive and Gene Autry Trail, two major north-south routes frequently impacted during heavy rains. Water pooling near 20th Street created further hazards for motorists traveling near the I-10 corridor. Authorities across the valley are continuing to monitor conditions as crews work to clear debris and ensure roadways are safe for travel.
