Actors From Revolution Stage Company’s Production Of Rent Share Their Journey And Upcoming Performances
The cast of Rent at the Revolution Stage Company continues to draw strong audiences, and two of the show’s performers, Mama Silver and Steven Zhang, sat down to share their personal journeys with the production and their experiences within the Coachella Valley theater community.
Both artists say Rent holds deep meaning for them. The show’s themes surrounding HIV and the LGBTQ+ community resonate strongly, with each noting that many people in their lives have been affected by HIV and AIDS. Zhang, who plays Angel, called the role a lifelong dream. Mama Silver, who recently relocated to Palm Springs specifically for the production, echoed how powerful and therapeutic the show has been.
The actors praised the Revolution Stage Company’s space, technical excellence, and welcoming environment. Zhang, a six-year resident of the Coachella Valley, works as the special events coordinator for the Transgender Health and Wellness Center. He produces fundraisers and community events, including the upcoming Equality Garden Party supporting the Marsha P. Johnson Youth Drop-In Center on December 6.
Mama Silver, who arrived in Palm Springs three months ago after completing a contract as a lead vocalist for Royal Caribbean, has quickly made a mark in the local entertainment scene. Through Rent, he has secured work as a featured MC at Morongo and will perform both the U.S. and Canadian national anthems at major upcoming events, including the Winter League baseball opening on January 22 and at Acrisure Arena on January 23.
Rent continues for one final weekend at the Revolution Stage Company, running Thursday through Sunday in downtown Palm Springs. Audiences still have four opportunities to see the show.
The theater’s upcoming slate includes Piano Riot with Jason Weber, Michael Orland’s Open Mic, several holiday productions such as Naughty and Nice, Plaid Tidings, Charlie Brown Christmas, Nick and Desi’s Holiday Special, and Songs from My Holiday Closet. In January, the theater will stage Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins, a rarely produced musical that has generated early excitement.
Both actors hinted at future possibilities, with Zhang considering auditions for upcoming productions, while Mama Silver focuses on a busy schedule of singing engagements and hosting duties around the valley.
