Off Air: Getting to Know NBC Palm Springs Reporter Brett Rosen
In this episode of Off Air, Thalia Hayden welcomes NBC Palm Springs reporter Brett Rosen into the podcast studio for a conversation about his beginnings, his passion for journalism, and his unique role as a reporter who was raised right here in the Coachella Valley.
Brett shared that his journey into broadcasting was inspired by his uncle, a former professional soccer player who later worked as a commentator for ESPN Deportes and Fox Deportes. Growing up, Brett says he wasn’t the kid who watched cartoons before school. Instead, he was watching Good Morning Football and First Take, admiring the broadcasters who helped shape his love for sports journalism.
When he reached college, Brett focused almost entirely on sports content. Transitioning into hard news was something he never expected to enjoy, but once he entered the industry, he discovered a new appreciation for telling meaningful stories and giving a voice to people who might otherwise go unheard. From weather to crime scenes to major community events, he says the range of coverage has helped him grow in ways he didn’t anticipate.
Being from Indio, Brett describes working in his hometown market as a rare privilege. The connection he feels with the community has been one of the most rewarding parts of the job. He’s been warmly received by viewers who recognize him not just as a journalist, but as someone who grew up right here in the Valley. He says reconnecting with former teachers and classmates in this new professional setting has been one of the most surreal parts of his career so far.
Brett also works closely with the digital team, producing quick-turn content for platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and X. He believes the future of news is already here, with digital platforms shaping how younger audiences consume information. For him, bridging the gap between traditional broadcast and fast-paced digital content is not only important, but essential.
Throughout the conversation, Brett credits his success to passion, community support, and the opportunities he’s had to learn every aspect of the newsroom, from editing to shooting to storytelling. He says the skills he’s building now will ultimately help him pursue his long-term goals in sports broadcasting.
