IID Plans New Substation in Thousand Palms to Serve 8,000 Customers
The Imperial Irrigation District has announced plans to build a new power substation in Thousand Palms, a project designed to support growing energy demands across the Coachella Valley. According to IID, the substation will serve approximately 8,000 residential and commercial customers once completed.
The new facility will be located west of Cook Street and just north of Interstate 10, positioning it to support fast-developing areas in and around Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert. IID says the project will be fully funded through a collaborative agreement involving Riverside County, the cities of Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert, the Burger Foundation, and two private developers.
Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2027, with the substation expected to be operational by the summer of 2028. IID emphasizes that the project will not result in increased costs for its customers.
The district says the new infrastructure will help improve reliability and ensure the electrical system keeps pace with continued growth throughout the region.
