Prematurity Awareness Month Highlights Innovative Care for the Tiniest Babies
November is Prematurity Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness for premature babies, their families, and the medical teams who care for them. More than 360,000 babies are born prematurely each year in the United States, representing about 10.4 percent of all births. For many families, the experience is overwhelming, emotional, and filled with uncertainty.
Dr. Diana Pontel, a board-certified pediatrician and mother of two, explains that caring for premature babies requires a level of specialization unlike any other area of newborn care. Even something as simple as a diaper must be redesigned to safely support their underdeveloped skin and tiny bodies.
Pampers, the number one choice of NICU professionals, created the world’s tiniest diaper: Pampers Swaddlers Size Extra Extra Small. Designed for babies born weighing less than 1.1 pounds, the diaper is made with premium soft materials to help protect delicate skin and prevent abrasion. Pampers was also the first brand to partner directly with NICUs to create a diaper specifically for premature infants.
For more than 25 years, Pampers has partnered with March of Dimes, a national organization focused on improving the health of mothers and babies. This month, Pampers is continuing its support with a donation to the March of Dimes NICU Family Support Program. The program provides comfort, education, and critical guidance for more than 50,000 families each year as they navigate the challenges of a newborn’s stay in the NICU.
