Botulism Cases from Recalled Infant Formula Rise to 31 Hospitalizations

The number of botulism cases linked to a recalled infant formula has grown, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting eight new illnesses across 15 states. A total of 31 infants have been hospitalized in connection with the outbreak, though no deaths have been reported.
The Food and Drug Administration has issued warnings that "By-Heart Whole Nutrition" baby formula remains on store shelves in multiple states despite the recall. The agency also confirmed the product was sold through online marketplaces and shipped internationally.
The FDA and CDC are urging parents to immediately stop using any "By-Heart Whole Nutrition" infant formula and check their homes for the recalled product. Parents should also contact their healthcare provider if their infant has consumed the formula and shows any signs of illness.
Botulism is a rare but serious illness caused by toxins that attack the nervous system. In infants, symptoms can include constipation, weakness, poor feeding, and a weak cry.
