Firebirds complete comeback over San Diego with Meyers' overtime goal

The Coachella Valley Firebirds defeated the San Diego Gulls on Friday night in overtime at Acrisure Arena by the score of 3-2.

Forward Ben Meyers delivered the game-winning goal nearly one minute into overtime. Nikke Kokko made a career-high 41 saves to improve the Firebirds' record to 8-5-2-0.

San Diego took an early 2-0 lead in the first period behind two power-play goals. Outside the man advantage, Coachella Valley did not allow a full strength goal.

Mostly due to the play of Kokko from the jump, who stopped 19 shots in the second period.

The Firebirds would get on the board and close the gap within a goal behind a beautiful wrister from JR Avon, his fourth goal of the season.

In the third period, the Firebirds would go on the power play for 15 seconds before Logan Morrison would tap in the rebound to tie the game, good for his team-leading ninth goal of the season.

Coachella Valley will wrap up their homestand on Sunday, November 23 against the Calgary Wranglers. Puck drops at 2 p.m.
