Trump and NYC Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani Find Surprising Common Ground in Oval Office Meeting

Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani appeared in an unexpectedly collegial Oval Office meeting Friday, signaling a potential shift in a relationship marked by public clashes during the mayoral campaign. Standing beside Trump, Mamdani was asked whether he believed the president is a fascist. Before he could answer, Trump cut in, laughing and telling him, “That’s OK – you can just say yes,” emphasizing a more relaxed tone than either side projected ahead of their meeting.

Despite weeks of tense rhetoric, both men described their discussion as constructive and even friendly. Trump said he would be happy to see Mamdani succeed as he prepares to take office and even suggested he could feel comfortable living in Mamdani’s New York City. Their shared focus on affordability, rising energy costs, and the city’s economic challenges shaped much of the conversation.

During the campaign, Trump encouraged voters to support former Gov. Andrew Cuomo over the Republican nominee, believing Cuomo had a better chance of defeating Mamdani. He also threatened federal consequences if Mamdani won. But after the mayor-elect secured more than 50 percent of the vote by campaigning on working-class issues, Trump signaled admiration for the scale of Mamdani’s win.

For Mamdani, maintaining a functional relationship with the White House will be critical. New York City’s Fiscal Year 2026 budget relies on $7.4 billion in federal funding, and both leaders noted the importance of cooperation on economic matters. They also touched on public safety and Middle East tensions, opting for a more unified tone than past exchanges over immigration enforcement and the Israel-Hamas war.

The meeting’s visual dynamic was notable. Trump remained seated behind the Resolute Desk while Mamdani stood slightly behind him. Still, the atmosphere was upbeat, with Trump even brushing aside an attack from Rep. Elise Stefanik, who had labeled Mamdani a “jihadist.” Trump said candidates often use harsh language in campaigns and called Mamdani “a very rational person” who wants New York “to be great again.”

Ahead of the meeting, Mamdani consulted with top Democrats, including Gov. Kathy Hochul, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and the Rev. Al Sharpton, seeking guidance on navigating the interaction.

Mamdani said the conversation ultimately “focused on a place of shared admiration and love, which is New York City.” Trump agreed, telling reporters he believes Mamdani may even “surprise some conservative people” once in office.
