Unpaid TSA Workers Struggle Through Holiday Season Despite End of Shutdown
With the holidays quickly approaching, some TSA workers say they are still waiting for paychecks they never received during the government shutdown. Even though the shutdown officially ended at 43 days, many Transportation Security Officers report they have been living with the financial impact for more than 50 days, continuing to work without pay while bills pile up.
For employees like Austin Lee and Jeanette Tabarada, the situation has become overwhelming. They say they are showing up for every shift, keeping airports running smoothly, but still have not been compensated for the work they’ve already done.
“How can anybody live with that?” one employee shared. “We’re still coming in day by day, all our shifts, working hard, and we’re still not getting paid. I came into work not even motivated, but all I can think is, what am I going to do?”
Families say their savings are nearly gone, and they are trying to avoid maxing out credit cards. Basic expenses like groceries, gas, and utilities now require dipping into what little remains in their accounts.
Lee said this Thanksgiving looks different for his family. “I already told my children, worst comes to worst, let’s just go to church to give thanks. Not maybe having a festive day.”
Tabarada echoed the struggle, noting that even with both spouses working, they are barely managing to cover essentials. “You’re still working, but you’re still pulling from savings just to pay little things. It’s tough.”
TSA employees say the agency committed to ensuring they would be paid for the time worked during the shutdown. Many now worry about when that promise will be fulfilled.
Despite their hardship, workers say they are leaning on each other for support and focusing on staying positive. “You can’t take life for granted,” Lee said. “Day by day, take it easy. Always have a smile on your face.”
