Water Wise Wednesday
Banana Yucca Named Plant of the Month by Coachella Valley Water District
This month, the Coachella Valley Water District is spotlighting a standout desert-friendly plant that thrives in our climate: the banana yucca. Lorraine Garcia, communication manager for the district, joined us to explain why this hardy plant is earning the title of Plant of the Month.
Garcia says the banana yucca is an ideal choice for Coachella Valley landscapes because it uses very little water and can handle extreme heat. It performs well in full sun and brings year-round greenery to any yard. Its long, sculptural leaves resemble an agave, but she notes that the tips can be a bit sharp, so homeowners should plant with care.
While the plant itself stays green throughout the year, the real show happens in the spring. The banana yucca produces cascading cream-to-white blossoms that grow from a central stalk, creating a striking visual contrast against its sturdy leaves.
After blooming, the plant produces an unexpected bonus: edible fruit. The fruit resembles a small, thick green banana, inspiring the plant’s name. Garcia says she hasn’t tried the fruit yet, but she hopes to one day.
With its beauty, toughness, and water-saving benefits, the banana yucca is another strong option for residents looking to create water-wise landscapes in the desert.
