Kohl’s Names Michael J. Bender As New Chief Executive Officer

Kohl’s has named Michael J. Bender as its new chief executive officer, marking a significant leadership transition for the retail chain. The company announced the decision on Sunday, elevating Bender from his role as interim CEO, which he has held since May.
Before joining Kohl’s, Bender served as president and CEO of Eyesmart Express, bringing leadership experience from the retail and consumer service sectors. His full-time appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the company as it continues to face challenges that have affected sales and customer engagement over recent years.
Kohl’s has undergone a series of setbacks, including the firing of its previous CEO for violating the company’s ethics code. That leadership change added turbulence at a time when the retailer was already working to redefine its brand appeal and store experience.
In addition, Kohl’s scaled back several departments, including petite sizing and jewelry, which analysts and customers say contributed to declining shopper interest. These adjustments were aimed at streamlining inventory and reducing costs, but ultimately led to consumer frustration and a dip in traffic.
With Bender now officially at the helm, Kohl’s will be looking to stabilize operations and reconnect with shoppers as the competitive landscape in retail continues to evolve.
