Palm Springs Recycling Center Accused of Turning Away Unhoused Individuals Amid Loitering Concerns

Earlier today, our newsroom received a tip alleging that a recycling business in Palm Springs is denying unhoused individuals the opportunity to recycle. NBC Palm Springs’ Brett Rosen followed up on that report and spoke with the business owner.

After visiting Ponce Recycling in the Smoke Tree Village Shopping Center, multiple business owners in the area confirmed ongoing issues with loitering, disturbances, and safety concerns that they say have intensified over time. These concerns, they claim, stem largely from unhoused individuals who frequently gather near the recycling center.

Lots of different issues—loitering, hollering, and erratic behavior. It’s scaring us as business owners and our customers,” one nearby shop owner said. Another described past incidents, including a heavy metal bin being thrown against a window. “We all use cans and other resources to make income,” the business owner added. “But as it’s become a vagrant problem and the loitering continues, it’s been a nuisance. Whether the cannery stays or goes—I think it should go.

Initially willing to go on camera, the owner of Ponce Recycling later declined. However, he told Rosen he does not believe his business is solely responsible for the loitering in the area. He pointed to a nearby abandoned building that many unhoused individuals reportedly use for shelter.

The owner also stated that his center aims to help people in the community and does not intentionally restrict access to those experiencing homelessness. According to workers, however, the recycling business has faced pressure from the owner of the shopping center to find a solution to the persistent complaints.

NBC Palm Springs has reached out to the City of Palm Springs and the Palm Springs Police Department to gather more information about the reported complaints and any actions taken. As of tonight, neither has responded.

As this story develops, we will continue to update.
