Riverside County Receives $970,000 Grant To Strengthen Drug-Impaired Driving Prosecutions

Riverside County is receiving a major financial boost in its ongoing effort to crack down on drug-impaired driving. The Board of Supervisors has approved a 970,000-dollar grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, slightly higher than last year’s award. The money will continue funding the District Attorney’s specialized team dedicated to prosecuting drug-related DUI cases.

The unit, made up of four prosecutors, handles these cases from the initial arrest through final sentencing. County officials say the focused approach has significantly changed outcomes. Since the program expanded in 2014, Riverside County’s conviction rate for drug-impaired drivers has more than doubled, reflecting both stricter enforcement and stronger courtroom strategy.

Authorities stress that impaired driving goes beyond alcohol. Prescription medications, marijuana and a wide range of substances can affect a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely. The DA’s Office and county leaders hope the continued funding will help reduce the rise in drug-related DUI incidents while improving safety for both drivers and pedestrians.

The grant renewal allows Riverside County to maintain its specialized prosecution team for another year as law enforcement agencies continue reminding the public that any form of impairment can lead to a DUI arrest.
