Tensions Rise as President Trump Presses Ukraine to Accept Controversial Peace Plan
New tensions are emerging as President Donald Trump continues pressing for an end to Russia’s war on Ukraine. During high-stakes peace talks between the U.S. and Ukraine over the weekend, Trump publicly accused Ukrainian leadership of showing “zero gratitude” for U.S. support, even as both nations’ delegations met in Geneva to advance negotiations.
The comments came as the administration pushes Ukraine to accept a 28-point peace plan by Thanksgiving. The proposal has raised concerns among Ukrainian officials, European partners, and lawmakers in both parties who fear the terms may favor Russia. Despite the criticism, the U.S. and Ukraine issued a joint statement saying they had “updated and refined” the peace framework and were making progress toward what they called a “just and lasting peace.”
On the ground, Ukraine is bracing for another harsh winter. Russian strikes are intensifying, and both sides are targeting each other’s heat and power infrastructure. As Ukrainian leaders thanked the U.S. during the talks, Trump’s public criticism added strain to already delicate negotiations.
Some of the most controversial elements of the U.S.-drafted proposal include requiring Ukraine to cede roughly one-fifth of its territory — including land not currently occupied by Russia — reduce its military forces by about one-third, and pause its path to NATO membership. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that the U.S. authored the initial plan, though many of its terms conflict with long-standing Ukrainian priorities.
When asked whether the peace plan represented his final offer, President Trump said, “No, not right now,” signaling some room for negotiation. European allies, meanwhile, are urging revisions that would strengthen protections for Ukraine and reduce the risk of future Russian aggression.
With winter closing in and diplomatic pressure mounting, the coming days will be critical as negotiations continue and the international community watches whether Ukraine will accept or reject the proposed agreement.
