CHP Launches Thanksgiving Maximum Enforcement Period to Target Impaired Driving

The California Highway Patrol is preparing for one of its busiest operations of the year as the agency ramps up enforcement for the Thanksgiving holiday travel period. Beginning at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, the CHP will initiate its annual Thanksgiving maximum enforcement period, placing additional officers on highways across the state.

During this time, patrol units will be focused heavily on identifying drunk or impaired drivers, with officials emphasizing the increased risk during holiday gatherings and long-distance travel. The Thanksgiving week traditionally brings some of the highest traffic volumes of the year, making safety a top priority.

Last year, CHP officers arrested just over 1,000 people statewide on suspicion of driving under the influence during the same enforcement period. Officers also reported 36 fatalities involving collisions and other traffic-related incidents, underscoring the dangers associated with impaired and distracted driving.

With millions of Californians expected to hit the road again this week, authorities are urging drivers to plan ahead, designate a sober driver if needed, and use extra caution during peak travel times. The maximum enforcement period will continue throughout the holiday weekend, with officers maintaining a visible presence on major routes to help ensure a safer holiday for travelers.
