Stolen Girl Scouts Community Food Pantry Returned After Weekend Disappearance
A wooden community food pantry built by Girl Scouts in Parkville, Maryland, was stolen over the weekend—then unexpectedly returned. The pantry, located next to the Parkville Community Fridge, disappeared sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning, surprising neighbors who rely on the setup to both give and receive food.
Kim Becker, troop leader for Girl Scouts Troop 1159, said her scouts constructed the pantry on November 15. When it suddenly went missing, she contacted the Bmore Community Fridge Network for help and even launched a donation fund, assuming she would need to replace it.
That changed Monday morning when she learned the pantry had been returned. Becker said she was disappointed it had been taken but found encouragement in the community’s quick response and renewed awareness. She added that the incident may have helped more neighbors discover the pantry and inspired additional donations.
Becker wanted the Girl Scouts to see that even when someone makes a harmful choice, the wider community can step forward with kindness. Neighbors have already begun restocking the pantry, ensuring that families in the Parkville area have access to food as Thanksgiving approaches.
Roughly $700 raised through donations will now be used to build another pantry and keep the shelves filled.
