A Sound of Hope: Galilee Center Serves 800 Families at Annual Thanksgiving Giveaway

Thanksgiving is often seen as the start of the season of giving, and at the Galilee Center in Mecca, that spirit was alive and unmistakable as hundreds of families gathered for the nonprofit’s annual Thanksgiving food basket distribution.

For one mother of four, the day brought a mix of relief and emotion. She never imagined she would rely on a nonprofit for a holiday meal, but recent hardships left her with no choice.
“My mother-in-law texted my husband and said there was a place in Mecca giving out food,” she said. “We knew we had to come.”

She explained that while the season has been tough, all she wanted was a normal Thanksgiving for her children.
“I’m not feeling it yet because I don’t have to say anything to them. They’re just going to see the food on the table, and that’s all they’ll care about.”

That sense of hope resonated throughout the event. For some families, the thud of a 23-pound turkey hitting the table was more than just a sound—it was reassurance that their holiday would not be forgotten.

Galilee Center officials say the need this year was greater than ever. In previous years, the organization typically served up to 500 families. This year, they prepared for around 800.
“We anticipated the numbers would rise because of the SNAP benefits being cut,” a staff member said. “And with immigration challenges, many families are willing to take the risk to come here so they can feed their loved ones.”

Each family needed only a small numbered ticket to receive a basket. Inside was a generous selection: fresh fruits and vegetables, tortillas, canned goods, and of course, a turkey.

Volunteers—some returning year after year—said that seeing the joy on families’ faces makes all their effort worthwhile.
“I can see that these people are delighted,” one volunteer shared. “Many of the younger children don’t fully understand what’s happening, but the older ones sure do.”

The Galilee Center’s work doesn’t end with Thanksgiving. The nonprofit has several food distributions planned in the coming month, along with a holiday toy drive aimed at helping families continue to feel supported through the season.
