Deadly Fire Tears Through Hong Kong High-Rise Complex

Firefighters in Hong Kong are battling a massive blaze that tore through multiple high-rise apartment buildings in the Tai Po District on Wednesday. Authorities say at least 13 people have been killed and at least 15 more injured, including two firefighters who were hurt while attempting rescues.
Officials report that extreme heat and heavy smoke made it difficult for crews to reach residents trapped on the upper floors. Flames rapidly spread through bamboo scaffolding surrounding parts of the complex, a common construction feature in Hong Kong that officials say may have accelerated the fire’s growth.
The apartment complex is home to many lower-income residents, including a disproportionate number of seniors ages 65 and older — raising concerns that many may have struggled to escape quickly.
Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire. Officials say this appears to be Hong Kong’s deadliest blaze in nearly 30 years.
Local emergency teams remain on the scene working to fully extinguish the flames and assist survivors.
